Dolphins are mammals, not fish. Specifically, they are marine mammals in the order Cetacea, which also includes whales and porpoises.

Here’s what makes dolphins mammals:
They breathe air using lungs, not gills.
They are warm-blooded and maintain a constant body temperature.
They give live birth (no eggs).
They nurse their young with milk produced by mammary glands.
They have some hair when born, though it usually disappears soon after.
So even though they live in water like fish, dolphins share many characteristics with land mammals—including us!
The Evolution of Dolphins: From Land to Sea
1. About 55–50 million years ago:
Dolphins’ ancestors were land-dwelling mammals, likely similar to small deer or wolf-like animals. One well-known early ancestor is Pakicetus, which lived near rivers and had legs and hooves. Surprisingly, it’s classified as an early whale!
2. Around 48–40 million years ago:
These creatures began spending more time in water, adapting to hunting fish. Over time, their limbs evolved into flippers, and their nostrils moved upward toward the top of the head, forming a blowhole. A key transitional species was Ambulocetus, known as the “walking whale.”
3. Around 40–30 million years ago:
These animals became fully aquatic. Their hind limbs shrank, their bodies became more streamlined, and tails developed flukes (like modern dolphins and whales). Basilosaurus, a massive early whale, still had tiny back legs but couldn’t walk anymore.
4. 25 million years ago to now:
Two major groups evolved:
Mysticetes (baleen whales)
Odontocetes (toothed whales, including dolphins and porpoises)
Dolphins belong to this toothed whale group. They evolved echolocation, social behaviors, and high intelligence.
Evidence of Evolution
Fossils: Show gradual changes in bone structure from legs to flippers.
DNA: Dolphins are genetically closer to hippos than to any fish!
Vestigial limbs: Some dolphins still have tiny internal pelvic bones—remnants of their land-walking past.

Dolphins are highly intelligent, social marine mammals known for their complex behaviors. Here’s an overview of their typical behavior:

1. Social Structure
Dolphins live in groups called pods, usually consisting of 5–20 individuals.
They form strong social bonds and can recognize each other by unique whistles.
In some species, large superpods of hundreds of dolphins can form temporarily.
2. Communication
Dolphins use clicks, whistles, and body language (like leaping, slapping tails) to communicate.
Each dolphin has a unique signature whistle—like a name.
3. Playfulness
Dolphins are known for playful behaviors, such as surfing waves, playing with seaweed, or interacting with boats.
They sometimes play with other species and even humans.
4. Intelligence
Dolphins show problem-solving skills, self-awareness (e.g., mirror tests), and use of tools (e.g., sponges to protect snouts).
They can learn complex tasks and are often trained for research or assistance roles.
5. Hunting & Feeding
They use sophisticated strategies like cooperative hunting, where pod members work together to herd fish.
Some use echolocation to find prey, bouncing sound waves off objects to “see” underwater.
6. Parental Care
Dolphin mothers are very attentive, nursing and protecting their calves for several years.
Other pod members may help care for young—this is called alloparenting.
